For a really strong and secure gate use decking board planks and make a ledged and braced type gate. Use the decking boards as the two ledges and as the diagonal brace also
Fix through using ‘Reisser’ type screws ( 40 x 4.5) or 1.5″ size 8 .
You can make the gate any height or width using this method.
I always space each vertical board about 5-6mm ( 0.25″) apart to allow for expansion when wet.
The advantage of using this material is that it is pressure treated with preservative, matches the decking that has been laid and is versatile and cost-effective.
But use cedar, or redwood. It is not toxic to the child and the splinters are safer.
